  5. Pharmacological properties
Collagen peptides are the hydrolysed form of collagen used as dietary supplements. Collagen peptides are highly digestible and absorbed by the body. Taking hydrolysed collagen supplements allows the body to maximise the benefits of collagen, providing essential peptides and amino acids to their site of action in the body. Collagen is a key component of the skin's structure, collagen fibres provide the infrastructure for elastin, which maintains the skin's elasticity, and for hyaluronic acid to trap moisture. Collagen represents around 90% of bone mass, providing the flexible framework to which mineral salts are added for strength. Collagen fibres are responsible for its structure and strength of cartilage. Collagen provides the structural foundation for hair and nails.

Physically active people need sufficient availability of amino acids to enable muscle synthesis during recovery. A high protein diet just after exercise helps maintain and restore the protein content in the muscles while also reducing the recovery time. Collagen peptides are also an excellent protein source to control appeptite and moderate cravings due to the high satiety effect they provide.
